The drive from Palmetto State Park to Davis Mountain State Park is 400 miles. That’s too much for us to do in one day with Nell. We located yet another state park about half way. This one was called, “South Llano River State Park”. Its seems that the parks in Texas just get better and better. The South Llano, when we were there, was up and running. Kayaks would be really great on this stretch of the river. Not a huge park by any means, but loaded with wildlife and history. The ubiquitous Armadillo was there. Birds by the score, most of which you’ll just not see in Missouri. What’s really unique is the Pecan groves and the Rio Grande turkey roosting that occurs there every winter. There really are tons of the big birds all over the place.
There are also Axis Deer. These deer, when I saw them, have no tails like your usual white tails, They are also striped in their front quarters like some sort of African bush antelope. They apparently escaped from a local big game hunting property and have been reproducing on their own in the park ever since. One morning Diane and I awoke to see a grey fox cruising our camp. What a great start to the day!
