I've always been in love with the circus and trapeze artists in particular. They soar above everyone, figuratively and literally. The relationship between the Flyer and the Catcher is what this song is about. It's more than entertainment. It's a life and death dance across the canvas sky. Living for the moment, free-flying, yet in total trust with your partner, as we all watch in amazement and wonder...Beautiful, inexplicable, daring, clutching yet free.
Lyrics
The Girl on the Flying Trapeze...written by John Jump
She always seems alone,
Even when the spotlight shines on her.
Surrounded by a crowd,
She’s mysterious like the Moon.
Does anyone really know,
Is it fear or is it confidence?
That makes her fly so high
Where no one else will go.
But I am the Catcher,
I make sure she won’t fall.
I catch her and then I let her go
To fly away again
See her fly,
She death defies,
Cross the canvass sky.
oh, oh oh,
The Girl on the Flying Trapeze.
She needs to be set free.
She tries to defy gravity,
And though the stakes are high,
She flies without net.
I came upon my role
Oh, so reluctantly.
I’m not the kind to fly
And let go of the bar.
But I am the Catcher,
I make sure she won’t fall.
I catch her and then I let her go
to fly away again
See her fly,
She death defies,
Cross the canvass sky.
oh, oh oh,
The Girl on the Flying Trapeze.
One day this will all end,
The lights, the crowd, the clowns below
The tents will all come down
I’ll be there as I always am.
But I am the Catcher,
I make sure she won’t fall.
I catch her and then I let her go
to fly away again.
See her fly,
She death defies,
Cross the canvass sky.
oh, oh oh,
Ropes are frayed
Tent decayed
Leaking rain
Hide the pain
The Girl on the Flying Trapeze.
