The Red Canoe...by John Jump

Floating down the river In a beat up red canoe.
Autumn has painted the treetops
The sky is incredibly blue
I cast my lure 'neath a sycamore
To capture a memory or two
Someone catches my eye downstream
Someone who's just come into view.

My memory turns like pages
To when the red canoe was new.
Waltzing together 'neath the starry skies
The katydid's rythym was true.
Oh, how we laughed at the sunset,
Thought the sun would always shine.
Nightfall always brought dancing
And the toasting of summer's red wine.

Soon the wind bends the branches.
The tattered leaves all drift away.
I'll keep on floating in this old red canoe,
By now I'm sure of the way.

Floating down the river in a beat up old canoe.
Autumn has settled in the valley.
The only one missing is you.
I cast my lure 'neath a sycamore
To capture a memory or two.
Someone catches my eye downstream
Someone who looks just like you.
