I wrote this song about writing a song. I lived with Tim Kennedy in Kirkwood, MO at the time and we had a large apple tree in the backyard of our rented house. I sat under that tree one day while trains were rolling by down the street, listening to the horns blow as they came through town. I was trying too hard to write a song and wasn't getting anywhere when I realized I could write a song about...writing a song.
Lyrics
Sittin' 'neath the Apple Tree, nothin' else I'd rather do.
Strummin' my new guitar, tryin' to write a song for you.
Now the 4:30 freight rolls by, that captain blows a note I need to know.
Such a long, lazy lonesome sound, It brings to mind all you mean to me.
Chorus:
Apple Tree Your fragrance lingers endlessly
Through the day, your blossoms make me tend to stay
On an on, I just can't leave "till I write my song.
The way i feel today...
Well I may as well move out of town,
i've locked up my house and moved outside.
And the telephone's ringing off the wall, nobody could want me half as much as i want you. No way...
Chorus...
Sittin' ' neath the Apple Tree, Nothin' else I'd rather do.
Strummin' my new guitar, tryin' to write a song for you.
Chorus...
